Spyderco Street Beat – Review

by GunGuy

Of all the knives I own the Spyderco Street Beat is the one I would stick in my pocket for EDC use and self-defense. Like my other Sypderco knives the fit and finish are excellent and the workmanship and materials are first class.

The design of the Spyderco Street Beat is what really won me over with this knife. The blade comes super sharp, and the VG-10 is a good steel. The deep finger choil and spine jimping make the knife a secure and comfortable fit in the hand.

I have larger hands and the handle looks like it might be too small for me. Keep in mind that it’s a small knife and that you could carry it in the small of your back or in the appendix position under a shirt with ease. However due to the design of the handle it is such that the knife grips well in a palm grip and reverse grip and the balance is absolutely perfect. This is one of the few knives I own that are equally well gripped back and forth. When you have the Street Beat in a reverse grip pointing towards your elbow the knife literally disappears from sight.

The sheath works well and has a very positive snap when the blade is pushed in. Initially it was some what difficult to take it out of the sheath. With about 50 insertions and removals it loosened up a bit and everything was perfect. The kydex sheath can be thumbed off or you can mount it on the included Spyderco G-Clip. I found that the G-Clip was too uncomfortable for in the waistband carry and I removed the G-clip and added a 1.75 in IWB belt loop at about a 20 degree angle and it made a big difference in comfort and concealability.

One of the best things about the Spyderco Street Beat is that in spite of being an all business fighting knife, it looks far from it, in part due to its size, but also the overall shape. Overall, this is a great knife design manufactured of the best materials with top quality fit and finish. Highly recommended.

American Sniper – Chris Kyle – Book Review

by GunGuy

American Sniper
is a remarkable story of heroism, patriotism, and self-sacrifice by an even more remarkable American, Chris Kyle. A Navy SEAL and highly trained sniper, Kyle is even more remarkable in his straightforward admittance that his accomplishments alone are not to be lauded, but the accomplishments and sacrifices of his fellow military men who sacrificed their vision, limbs, and some ultimately their lives in fighting for the freedoms that we often take for granted, yet hold so dear. It may not be much, but here is one American that is forever grateful and thankful to Chris Kyle and ALL of our brave men and women fighting for our country.

Kyle joins the ranks of such American sniper greats as Carlos Hathcock 93 confirmed kills during the Vietnam War, and whose sniper exploits were so eloquently related to the reader in these two books written by Charles Henderson; Marine Sniper: 93 Confirmed Kills and Silent Warrior: The Marine Sniper’s Story Vietnam Continues, as well as, other sniper greats such as; Chuck Mawhinney a U.S. Marine with 103 confirmed kills during the Vietnam War and Adelbert Waldron the previous U.S. Military record holder with 109 confirmed kills.

One particular aspect that I liked about how this book was written was the occasional viewpoint expressed by Kyle’s wife, Taya. Although both she and Kyle allude to problems both faced concerning each other and his absence during his military service, one can’t help but realize what a truly remarkable women Taya is and Chris was a damn lucky man to have her.

I really liked Kyle’s no apologetic statement that he enjoyed his job and took great pride in saving the lives of his fellow soldiers as they fought against the evils that they found in Iraq. Kyle doesn’t go into a lot of gruesome detail concerning that subject but he makes it painfully clear that unless you have actually been there and seen the evil that hasn’t been diluted by politicians and the media, then you really have no idea what it is like.

Kyle not only gives you a glimpse into the world that he and his fellow SEAL’s lived in during the Iraq War, but also the difficulties he faced when he came home in between tours and for good upon his retirement from the Navy. And although there were difficulties, he also shares some very humorous moments as well. I especially liked the story about the “burglar” breaking into his home while he was on leave and while he was still in bed after his wife left for work. I was laughing so hard that I couldn’t stop for several minutes.

Chris Kyle was one of the finest soldiers the United States of America has every produced and one hell of a human being and a truly great American. I highly recommend this inspirational biography of an extraordinary human being to everyone.

Vortex Viper PST 1-4x24mm SFP Review

by GunGuy

Vortex has become known as a company that brings better than class performance for a great price. Their PST line is made in the Philippines, which is common and makes some great glass and optics for other companies too. The PST differs from the HD line in that they have illuminated reticles.

The 1-4 PST is just the ticket for a short to medium range optic. The glass is very good and just as importantly the eye relief is very forgiving. This scope offers more dialing than I think is needed on an optic of 4x, but that is all user preference. The MRAD reticle along with the MIL adjustments means that you can quickly dial if you choose to. For example if you call a 1 MIL wind with the scope at 4x you would just dial 10 .1 MIL adjustments on your windage dial. No complicated math that comes from using a MIL reticle with MOA adjustments. Also the adjustments are very easy to make, so its worth running a rubber band or electrical tape over the knobs to keep from accidentally adjusting them by rubbing them on gear.

An important note to mention is that as a Second Focus Plane scope the reticle is only ‘right’ at one power, usually the highest and on this scope it is at 4X. That means a 1 MIL read with the scope at 2x would actually be 2MIL.

I’ve used this scope for tactical carbine class with ranges from muzzle to 450 yards and it works amazingly. At these ranges I don’t see a big enough difference in glass that I feel the need to run a different optic. This is a great scope and Vortex is a good company that stands behind their products with great customer service. If you don’t like it and aren’t happy they will do whatever they can to make it right. Buy with confidence, highly recommended.
